Christell Thomas’ social worker stopped her from renting the first apartment she picked out.
The East Orange apartment was in a good neighborhood, was near Thomas’ aunt, and would allow Thomas’ kids to stay in their school district. Thomas, who had been homeless for several months, thought these were modest enough requests, but Brenda Myrick, director of Social Services of Family Promise Essex, nixed her choice.
